There was always a certain amount of risk with the occupation that Derek keeps, working for some of Hell's kitchen's most vile of criminal families. Keeping them alive when they were reckless enough to fight for territory or someone spilled information they shouldn't have but he was silent. He never really kept his head down like he should have like he was told to. People talked when they thought he wasn't listening and he knew too much for his own good. He's guilty of starting those shootouts when they happened though. Stealing information from his employers to sell to the other was his second income if he didn't get caught.
Why would you pay a silent man any heed when he starts no trouble that you can see?
Derek would be lying if he wasn't a little paranoid when Daredevil started going after his employers to get to his higher target, thinking the man would somehow find him and stick him behind bars too. And then after Midland Circle collapsed, sightings for the Devil ceased and he could breathe a little easier. Still, he was paranoid that he'd come back somehow.
Tonight was no different. He decided to stay behind to see what some of the lackeys did out on the streets, so he sat on the top of a van while they parked on some street. Listening to the chatter, the attempts at catcalling, the stupid jokes, it was then that he realized that this was a waste of time. That he should have just gone home right after he patched some idiot up like he always did.
To think, this was how someone used their time on and off the clock.
